Best Socks for Skating: What Actually Matters

Top-down view of checkered TAKIA crew socks with black suede skate shoes on concrete

Skate shoes get all the attention, but your socks take the beating: high tops rubbing your ankle, hours of push, and a lot of sweat. Here's what to look for in a sock you'll actually skate in.

1. Crew height protects your ankles

Low-cut socks slide down into the shoe, and your ankle bone pays for it on every board flip. A crew-height sock sits above the collar of most skate shoes, so it takes the rubbing instead of your skin. It's the most practical reason crew socks and skating go together.

2. Cushion where it counts

Look for a cushioned footbed and heel. A terry-loop sole, the small looped yarn on the inside of the foot, adds padding for landings and long sessions without making the sock bulky in a slim skate shoe. Every TAKIA sock has a terry loop footbed and medium cushion.

3. A cuff and arch that hold

A sock that bunches under your foot or sags around your ankle is distracting fast. Elastic arch support keeps the sock locked in place, and a ribbed cuff keeps it up. A seamless toe means no ridge rubbing against your toes inside the shoe.

4. Fabric that handles a session

Combed cotton is soft and breathable, and a bit of stretch helps the sock keep its shape after a lot of wear and washing. Wash cold and skip the dryer heat when you can; it keeps the elastic working longer.

5. And yes, the look matters

Skating has always had a sock style: tube stripes, checkerboards, and all-black for people who don't want to think about it. Checks and stripes also hide scuffs and grip-tape dust better than plain white.

Our skate picks

  • Laguna: three black-and-grey checkerboard crews.
  • School Yard: varsity tube stripes on white, heather grey and black.
  • Carbon: three black crews with grey heel and toe, for the no-thought days.
  • Combat: camo, checkerboard and tie-dye in one pack.

See every option on our skate socks page.
